To ensure the longevity and vibrant appearance of your Malawi flag, follow these care instructions:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Wash Gently: Use a mild detergent to clean the flag, helping to preserve its colours and fabric integrity. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals.
    • Machine Wash: If you need to machine wash, place the flag in a mesh bag and set the washer to a gentle cycle with cold water to prevent damage.
    • Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry naturally. Avoid tumble drying, as the high heat can shrink or damage the material.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Make sure the flag is completely dry before storing it to avoid mould or mildew. Store it in a cool, dry, and shaded area, away from direct sunlight.
  3. Folding the Malawi Flag:
    • Begin by laying the flag flat on a clean, dry surface, making sure it is completely dry before folding.
    • Fold the flag lengthwise, bringing the top and bottom edges together while keeping the design facing outward.
    • Next, fold the flag in half again, aligning the edges and smoothing out any wrinkles for a neat appearance.
    • Continue folding the flag into smaller sections, either in thirds or quarters, ensuring that each fold is even and the flag remains symmetrical.
    • Once folded, the flag should form a compact rectangle, with the red, black, and green stripes clearly visible, and the emblem positioned on top.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp objects and rough surfaces to prevent snags and tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is properly fastened to its pole or rope, allowing it to move freely in the wind.
    • Flag Exposure: To extend the life of the flag, take it down during extreme weather or overnight to reduce exposure to damaging elements.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: If fraying or damage occurs, temporarily replace the flag with a spare and arrange for professional repairs by a skilled seamstress.
    • Replacement: When the flag starts showing signs of wear and tear, it may be time to replace it to ensure you always have a fresh flag for important occasions.

Flying the Malawi Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Attaching with the Header and Loops: Fasten the reinforced loops at the top of the flag to the halyard or rope using the sister clips. Ensure the flag is positioned correctly before raising it to ensure it flies securely and proudly.
    • Attaching with the Vertical Sleeve: Slide the flag’s vertical sleeve over the flagpole, ensuring it is centred and hangs evenly. For flagpoles with a diameter larger than 28mm, enquire about custom sleeves or adaptors to guarantee a snug and secure fit before raising the flag.
    • Raise the flag smoothly and respectfully, making sure it is fully extended without touching the ground.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • When flying the flag, ensure the black section with the rising sun is at the top. If displayed vertically, the black portion with the rising sun should be on the right-hand side when viewed from the front.
    • Always display the flag with respect and dignity, ensuring the emblem is visible and undamaged.
  • Flying the Flag at Half-Mast:
    • To fly the flag at half-mast, raise it to the top of the pole, then lower it to the halfway point.
    • Lower the flag carefully and respectfully to honour the occasion, maintaining a solemn and dignified manner.
    • Once the period of mourning or observance has ended, raise the flag back to full mast.
  • Flag Etiquette for Sunrise and Sunset:
    • The flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset, ensuring it is flown only during daylight hours.
    • If you are unable to lower the flag at sunset, take it down at the end of the day and store it properly to prevent any damage.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Avoid flying the flag in severe weather conditions such as heavy rain, storms, or strong winds, as these can cause wear and damage to the fabric.
    • In windy conditions, consider lowering the flag to protect it from fraying or tearing. Always monitor the weather to ensure the flag stays in good condition.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the flag is damaged, worn out, or no longer suitable for display, it should be retired with respect.
    • The proper method of disposal is through ceremonial burning or cutting, ensuring the flag is treated with the reverence it deserves.
    • Consult local customs or organisations for the appropriate flag retirement procedures to ensure proper handling and respect.

By following these care instructions, you’ll maintain the bright, lasting quality of your Fully Sewn Malawi Flag, ensuring it remains a proud symbol of your national heritage. Proper care honours the significance of this iconic flag.
