To ensure the longevity and vibrant appearance of your Guinea flag, follow these care instructions:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Wash Gently: Use a mild detergent to clean the flag, helping to maintain its colour and fabric integrity. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is required, place the flag in a mesh laundry bag and select a gentle cycle with cold water to prevent damage.
    • Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Do not tumble dry, as high heat can shrink or harm the material.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it to prevent mould and mildew. Keep it in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight.
  3. Folding the Guinea Flag:
    • Begin by placing the flag on a clean, flat surface, ensuring it is free from any dirt or debris.
    • Fold the flag in half lengthwise, carefully aligning the edges to form a crease down the centre.
    • Keeping the flag folded, bring the top edge down to meet the bottom edge, resulting in a smaller rectangle.
    • Starting from the hoist side (where the flag attaches to the pole), fold the flag into a triangle by bringing the top corner down to the bottom edge.
    • Continue creating triangular folds by bringing the bottom corner up to the top edge, ensuring each fold is neat and properly aligned.
    • Keep folding in this triangular manner until the entire flag is compacted, tucking in any loose ends to secure them.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp objects or rough surfaces to prevent snags and tears.
    • Secure Installation: Make sure the flag is securely attached and can move freely when displayed.
    • Flag Exposure: To extend the life of the flag, take it down during extreme weather or at night to minimise exposure to harsh elements.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: If you notice fraying or damage, replace the flag with a spare and have the damaged one professionally repaired by a seamstress.
    • Replacement: As the flag ages, consider purchasing a new one to ensure you always have a fresh flag for significant events.

Flying the Guinea Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Start by ensuring the flagpole is clean and clear of any obstructions.
    • Attaching with Header Loops: If your flag is designed with header loops, slide the loops onto the flagpole before raising it. Make sure they are evenly spaced and securely fastened before hoisting the flag.
    • Attaching with Vertical Sleeve: For flags that feature a vertical sleeve, simply slide the flag onto the pole, ensuring it fits tightly. Once it’s properly positioned, raise the flag to your desired height.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • When displayed, ensure the flag hangs vertically with the red stripe at the top, symbolising the nation’s blood.
    • For horizontal displays, orient the flag so that the red stripe is in the left corner when facing it.
    • Avoid letting the flag touch the ground or any other surfaces.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • To fly the flag at half-mast, first raise it to the top of the pole briefly, then lower it to the halfway mark.
    • This act signifies mourning or respect and is appropriate during national days of mourning or upon the passing of significant figures.
    • Always bring the flag fully down to the ground before raising it again after displaying it at half-mast.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • Raise the flag at sunrise and lower it at sunset. If illuminated at night, it may remain up after dark.
    • When lowering the flag, do so with care by folding it neatly before storing it, reflecting your respect for this national symbol.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Keep an eye on weather conditions before flying the flag. It’s best to lower the flag during severe weather, including strong winds or storms, to avoid damage.
    • Refrain from flying the flag in extreme conditions such as heavy rain or high winds to maintain its integrity and appearance.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the flag is worn or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired in a respectful manner.
    • The preferred method is to burn the flag in a dignified ceremony, ensuring safety and respect throughout the process.
    • Alternatively, contact local veteran organisations or flag disposal programmes that offer proper retirement services.

By following these care instructions, you’ll ensure that your Fully Sewn Guinea Flag remains vibrant, durable, and a proud symbol of your heritage for many years. Proper care reflects the respect you have for your nation.
