To ensure the longevity and vibrant appearance of your Guinea-Bissau flag, follow these care instructions:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Wash: Use a mild detergent when cleaning the flag to maintain its colours and fabric integrity. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals.
    • Machine Washing: If machine washing is necessary, place the flag in a mesh laundry bag and set the machine to a gentle cycle with cold water to prevent any damage.
    • Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it up to air dry. Refrain from using a tumble dryer, as excessive heat can shrink or harm the material.
  2. Storage:
    • Safe Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it to prevent mould or mildew. Keep it in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight.
  3. Folding the Guinea-Bissau Flag:
    • Position the Flag: Start by placing the flag on a clean, flat surface, ensuring the green stripe is closest to you and the black star is in the left corner. Smooth out any wrinkles to facilitate easier folding.
    • First Lengthwise Fold: Fold the flag in half lengthwise, bringing the top edge down to meet the bottom edge. Make sure to smooth out any creases to keep the fold tidy.
    • Second Lengthwise Fold: Fold the flag in half lengthwise again.
    • Horizontal Fold: Now, fold the flag horizontally by bringing the short edge up to meet the opposite short edge. At this point, the flag should be reduced to a quarter of its original size, with the star still clearly displayed.
    • Final Horizontal Fold: Fold the flag one last time horizontally, creating a compact rectangle. Ensure that the black star is prominently positioned, symbolising Guinea-Bissau’s national pride and unity.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp items or rough surfaces to prevent snags and tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is firmly attached and can move freely when displayed.
    • Limit Exposure: To extend the life of the flag, take it down during severe weather or overnight to minimise exposure to harsh elements.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: If you notice any fraying or wear, replace the flag with a spare and have the damaged one professionally repaired by a seamstress.
    • Replacement: As the flag nears the end of its lifespan, consider getting a new one to ensure you always have a fresh flag ready for important occasions.

Flying the Guinea-Bissau Flag:

  • Raising the Flag
    • Header with Loops: For flags featuring a header with loops, connect the reinforced loops to the hooks or halyard clips on the flagpole. Make sure the sister clips are securely fastened to avoid any slipping, and then pull the halyard to hoist the flag.
    • Vertical Sleeve: For flags designed with a vertical sleeve, gently slide the flag onto the pole, ensuring that the sleeve fits snugly around it. Once the flag is fully raised, secure it at the base using a flag holster or clip to keep it stable.
    • The Guinea-Bissau flag should always be hoisted quickly and respectfully, ideally with two people to ensure it does not touch the ground.
  • Displaying the Flag
    • When flown alongside other flags, the Guinea-Bissau flag should be at an equal height and prominence to show respect for national symbols.
    • The black star, symbolising the unity of the African people, should be positioned outward and clearly visible.
    • It must always be positioned to the left (from the observer’s perspective) when displayed next to another flag.
    • The flag should never be draped over vehicles or used as a covering for furniture, ensuring it is treated with the dignity it deserves.
  • Flying the Flag at Half-Mast
    • In times of mourning, the flag should be raised to the top of the flagpole briskly and then lowered to half-mast slowly.
    • The half-mast position should be approximately halfway down the pole, with the black star still clearly visible.
    • When lowering the flag from half-mast, first raise it briefly to the top before bringing it down completely.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset
    • The Guinea-Bissau flag should be raised at sunrise and taken down at sunset to honour the nation respectfully.
    • If displayed at night, the flag must be properly illuminated to ensure it remains visible and dignified.
    • It is customary to lower the flag slowly at sunset, taking care to avoid any contact with the ground.
  • Weather Conditions
    • In adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain, strong winds, or storms, the flag should be taken down to prevent damage.
    • Prolonged exposure to extreme weather can cause the fabric to fray or fade, so only fly the flag in suitable conditions to maintain its quality.
    • Ensure the flag is completely dry before raising it again after inclement weather to avoid potential fabric damage.
  • Retirement of the Flag
    • When the Guinea-Bissau flag becomes worn, faded, or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired respectfully.
    • Flags should never be discarded casually; instead, they should be folded carefully and disposed of through burning or another appropriate method that honours their significance.
    • Consider replacing old flags with new ones to continue displaying your national pride in a dignified manner.

By following these care instructions, you’ll ensure that your Fully Sewn Guinea-Bissau Flag remains vibrant, durable, and a symbol of pride for many years. Proper care reflects the respect you have for your heritage and nation.
