To ensure the longevity and vibrant appearance of your Ethiopia flag, follow these care instructions:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent to clean the flag, preserving its colour and fabric integrity. Avoid bleach and harsh chemicals.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is required, place the flag inside a mesh laundry bag and select a gentle cycle with cold water to minimise any potential damage.
    • Drying: Allow the flag to air dry by laying it flat or hanging it up. Do not use a tumble dryer, as high heat can shrink or harm the material.
  2. Storage:
    • Safe Storage: Make sure the flag is fully dry before storing it to avoid mould or mildew. Keep it in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.
  3. Folding the Ethiopia Flag:
    • Select a Clean Area: Start by finding a clean, flat space to lay the flag, ensuring it is clear of any dirt or debris.
    • Arrange the Flag: Position the flag with the Ethiopian emblem facing downwards to protect the design during the folding process.
    • Initial Fold: Fold the flag in half lengthwise, bringing the bottom edge up to meet the top edge. Carefully align the edges to prevent creasing.
    • Next Fold: While the flag is still folded, bring the left edge over to the right edge to form a narrower rectangle, ensuring the corners are neatly aligned.
    • Subsequent Fold: Fold the flag in half again by bringing the bottom edge up to the top edge of the newly formed rectangle. Gently press down to create a crisp edge.
    • Final Folds: For larger flags, continue folding in half until it reaches a manageable size. If needed, roll the flag gently to avoid creases and preserve the design.
    • Secure the Fold: Once folded, you may secure it with a soft cloth strap or a rubber band to keep it compact during storage.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp items or rough surfaces to prevent snags and tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is securely attached and can move freely when displayed.
    • Flag Exposure: To extend the life of the flag, take it down during severe weather or at night to reduce exposure to harsh conditions.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: If you spot fraying or wear, replace the flag with a spare and have the damaged one professionally repaired by a seamstress.
    • Replacement: As the flag ages, consider purchasing a new one to ensure you always have a fresh flag ready for significant occasions.

Flying the Ethiopia Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Start by checking that the flagpole is securely installed and in good condition.
    • Attaching with Header Loops: If your flag is designed with a header featuring loops, thread the halyard through the reinforced loops and fasten the clips. This method ensures a secure and straightforward attachment to the flagpole.
    • Utilising a Vertical Sleeve: For flags equipped with a vertical sleeve, slide the flag down onto the flagpole until it reaches the desired height. Make sure the flag is correctly positioned to allow it to wave freely in the wind.
    • Gradually raise the flag, keeping it taut to avoid tangling. Once at the top, secure the halyard to prevent the flag from slipping down.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • Make sure the Ethiopian emblem is oriented correctly, with the blue disc facing outward.
    • When displaying the flag, position it at eye level or higher to enhance visibility and show respect.
    • If you are flying multiple flags, ensure the Ethiopian flag is at the same height or higher than the others, placing it to the right of the observer when displayed alongside them.
    • Avoid any obstructions such as trees, buildings, or other objects that could hinder the flag from fluttering freely in the wind.
  • Flying the Flag at Half-Mast:
    • To display the flag at half-mast, first raise it fully to the top of the pole and then lower it to the halfway mark.
    • Maintain the flag at half-mast during a period of mourning or as directed by official guidelines.
    • When returning the flag to its full position, always raise it fully to the top before lowering it completely.
  • Flag Etiquette at Sunrise and Sunset:
    • Raise the flag at sunrise, ensuring it is fully unfurled and briskly elevated to signify the start of the day.
    • Lower the flag at sunset with care and dignity. After bringing it down, fold or store it properly to maintain its condition.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Be aware of adverse weather conditions. Remove the flag during severe weather, including storms, strong winds, or snowfall, to protect it from damage.
    • If the flag becomes wet from rain, allow it to dry completely before storing to prevent mildew or deterioration.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the flag is worn or irreparably damaged, it is crucial to retire it respectfully.
    • Consider ceremonial burning or burial to honour its symbolism, ensuring this is done in a private and respectful manner.
    • Contact local veterans’ organisations or inquire about flag retirement ceremonies in your area for proper disposal methods.

By following these care instructions, you’ll ensure that your Fully Sewn Ethiopia Flag remains vibrant, durable, and a proud symbol of your heritage for many years. Proper care reflects the respect you hold for your nation and culture.
