Proudly Wave the Flag of the Nature Island with Our Fully Sewn Dominica Flag

Dominica, known as the “Nature Island” of the Caribbean, is famous for its lush rainforests, dramatic mountain landscapes, and vibrant culture. With a rich heritage shaped by its indigenous Kalinago people and European settlers, Dominica is celebrated for its unique natural beauty and biodiversity, including the famous Boiling Lake and numerous hot springs. Our Fully Sewn Dominica Flag embodies this spirit, making it an ideal choice for expressing your pride.

The Dominica Flag:

The Dominica Flag serves as a powerful emblem of the nation’s identity and strength. It features significant elements that celebrate the island’s rich culture and history:
  • Green Field: Symbolises the island’s lush greenery and abundant natural beauty.
  • Cross: Represents Christianity, reflecting the strong religious traditions that shape the community.
  • Red Disc: The vibrant red disc at the centre, featuring a parrot and stars, highlights the nation’s commitment to social justice and unity.
  • Yellow, Black, and White Stripes:
    • Yellow: Signifies the plentiful sunshine, vital agricultural products, and the heritage of the Carib and Arawak peoples.
    • White: Symbolises purity of aspirations and the clarity of Dominica’s rivers and waterfalls.
    • Black: Represents the fertile soil and the deep African ancestry of the population.
  • Ten Lime Green Stars: Each star represents one of the ten parishes of Dominica, symbolising their equal importance and embodying hope for the future.
  • Parrot: The Sisserou parrot, a national icon, represents the unique wildlife of Dominica and underscores the importance of conservation.

To maintain the vibrant appearance and longevity of the Dominica flag, please follow these care instructions:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Wash: Use a mild detergent to clean the flag, ensuring its colours and fabric remain intact. Avoid bleach and harsh chemicals.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, place the flag inside a mesh laundry bag and use a gentle cycle with cold water to prevent damage.
    • Drying: Air dry the flag by laying it flat or hanging it. Do not tumble dry, as high heat can shrink or damage the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Correct Storage: Ensure the flag is fully dry before storing it to prevent mould and mildew. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  3. Folding the Dominica Flag:
    • Prepare the Flag: Begin by laying the flag face down on a clean, flat surface, ensuring it is smooth and free from wrinkles.
    • First Lengthwise Fold: Fold the left side of the flag over to the right, aligning the edges to create a long, narrow rectangle with the design on the inside.
    • Second Lengthwise Fold: Fold the flag in half again lengthwise, ensuring the edges are aligned. This should leave you with a thinner strip, with the emblem and colours hidden inside.
    • Make Triangular Folds: Starting at one end, take the corner and fold it diagonally toward the opposite edge to create a triangle. Press down firmly to crease the fold.
    • Continue Folding: Continue folding the triangle over itself until you reach the end of the flag, ensuring each triangle is even and neatly aligned.
    • Secure the End: Once you’ve folded to the end, tuck in any remaining fabric within the folds to keep the flag compact and secure.
    • Final Adjustment: Make any necessary adjustments to ensure the folded flag looks neat and presents well when stored or displayed.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp items or rough surfaces to prevent snags and tears.
    • Secure Display: Make sure the flag is securely attached and can move freely when displayed.
    • Minimise Exposure: To prolong the life of the flag, take it down during severe weather or at night to minimise exposure to harsh elements.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: If you see fraying or damage, replace the flag with a spare and have the damaged flag repaired by a professional seamstress.
    • Replacement: As the flag ages, consider getting a new one to ensure you always have a vibrant flag ready for important occasions.

Flying the Dominica Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Start by ensuring that the flagpole is clean and free of any debris.
    • For flags featuring reinforced loops, carefully thread the halyard through each loop to guarantee a secure connection before hoisting the flag.
    • If your flag has a vertical sleeve, slide it onto the pole until it is correctly positioned, then fasten it securely to prevent any slipping.
    • Stand facing the flagpole, grasp the halyard, and pull it gently and steadily to raise the flag, making sure it ascends smoothly without getting caught or tangled.
    • Raise the flag high enough to ensure it is fully visible and unobstructed.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • When displaying the Dominica flag, make sure it is oriented correctly, with the red disc and parrot facing forward.
    • Position the flag in a prominent spot, ideally at a height that allows for clear visibility and appreciation.
    • If flying multiple flags, place the Dominica flag in the centre or at the highest point to signify respect.
  • Flying the Flag at Half-Mast:
    • To lower the flag to half-mast, first raise it to the top of the flagpole, then lower it to the designated half-mast position.
    • This position is typically one-third down from the top of the flagpole.
    • This act is a gesture of honour and mourning during significant events, such as national tragedies or the death of notable individuals.
  • Flag Etiquette at Sunrise and Sunset:
    • It is traditional to raise the flag at sunrise and lower it at sunset.
    • Ensure the flag is hoisted briskly at dawn and lowered with ceremony at dusk to convey the appropriate respect.
    • If the flag is illuminated at night, it may remain flying; otherwise, it should be taken down by sunset.
  • Weather Considerations:
    • Always check the weather conditions before displaying the flag. In severe weather, such as high winds or storms, it is advisable to take the flag down to avoid damage.
    • Refrain from flying the flag during heavy rain or snowfall to preserve its quality and appearance.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the Dominica flag becomes worn, faded, or unsuitable for display, it should be retired respectfully.
    • Proper retirement involves cutting the flag into pieces to prevent any disrespectful use, followed by either burning the pieces or burying them in a dignified manner.
    • Consider holding a small ceremony to honour the flag and the values it embodies during the retirement process.

By adhering to these care instructions, you’ll help ensure that your Fully Sewn Dominica Flag remains vibrant, durable, and a proud symbol for years to come. Proper care demonstrates your respect for your heritage and country.
