To maintain the durability and vibrant look of the flag, please adhere to the following care guidelines:
- Cleaning:
- Wash Gently: Use a mild detergent to prevent fading. Avoid bleach or any harsh chemicals that may damage the flag.
- Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Protect the flag by placing it in a mesh laundry bag to avoid snags.
- Drying: Air dry the flag by laying it flat or hanging it up. Do not use a tumble dryer, as high heat can cause shrinkage and damage the fabric.
- Storage:
- Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing. Keep it in a cool, dry place to avoid moisture and mildew.
- Folding the Belgium Flag:
- Lay the flag flat with the black stripe on the left. Fold the flag lengthwise so the two shorter edges align.
- Fold the flag lengthwise again, ensuring that the black stripe remains on the left side and the colours align neatly.
- Starting from one end, fold the flag into a triangular shape by bringing the bottom edge up to meet the top edge. Continue folding in triangular segments until the entire flag is neatly folded.
- Ensure that each fold is smooth and even, maintaining the flag’s colours and stripes in proper alignment.
- Handling:
- Avoid Sharp Objects: Prevent contact with sharp surfaces or objects that could cause snags, tears, or abrasions.
- Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is properly hoisted and remains free from obstructions.
- Flag Exposure: Minimise exposure to harsh weather conditions. Remove the flag during severe weather or at night to prolong its lifespan.
- Repairs:
- Minor Repairs: For any wear or fraying, replace the flag with a spare and have the damaged flag repaired by a professional seamstress.
- Replacement: When the flag reaches the end of its useful life, consider ordering a new one to ensure you always have a fresh flag for displays and celebrations.
Flying the Belgium Flag:
- Raising the Flag:
- Ensure the flag is clean and free from creases or damage before raising it.
- Attach the flag to the pole with the black stripe on the left side when the flag is hoisted.
- Raise the flag briskly and smoothly to the top of the pole. Avoid letting the flag touch the ground as you lift it.
- Displaying the Flag:
- When displayed vertically, the black stripe should be on the left. If flown horizontally, the black stripe should be at the top.
- Ensure the flag is fully unfurled and visible from all directions. It should not be obstructed or tangled.
- Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
- To fly the flag at half-mast, first raise it to the top of the pole and then lower it to a point halfway down. Ensure it remains in this lowered position during the period of mourning or commemoration.
- When the period of mourning concludes, raise the flag to the top of the pole before bringing it down.
- Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
- Raise the flag at sunrise or as soon as possible after daylight breaks, ensuring it is hoisted before the sun is fully up.
- Lower the flag at sunset or before dark, ensuring it is taken down before nightfall to prevent exposure to darkness.
- Weather Conditions:
- Remove the flag during severe weather conditions, such as high winds, rain, or snow, to prevent damage.
- Retirement of the Flag:
- Retire the flag when it shows signs of significant wear, including fraying, tears, or fading.
- Follow appropriate protocols for flag retirement, which typically involves respectful disposal, such as burning in a dignified manner or through a local flag disposal ceremony.
By following these care instructions, you can keep your Belgium flag in excellent condition, preserving its vibrant colours and durability. Remember, your flag is a symbol of pride in Belgium and your respect for its heritage.
